Grant’s Tomb Gallery marks the 100th Anniversary of the beginning of The Great War
San Francisco, Ca, August 1, 2014 – Grant’s Tomb Gallery in North Beach will be hosting a show to mark the Hundredth Anniversary of the beginning of World War One featuring poster and collage art in The Guns of August!, Featuring the Social Realist work of Erik Chipchase, the show also incorporates works from notable collage artists Winston Smith and Rene Apallec. Guns of August! opens Friday, August 15, 2014.
“This era has always fascinated me visually,” admits artist Erik Chipchase, “with the juxtaposition of the new 20th Century technology and the petrified military culture of the 19th Century. In 1914, a silhouette of a French officer had scarcely changed since The Crimean War in 1830, except for the medals. Modern warfare had not yet made its impression.”
The Great War is also significant in the art world for spawning the revolutionary Dadaist and Cubist movements, which will be well represented by Winston Smith and Rene Apallec.
The French have a saying, “plus ca change, plus c’est la meme chose,” which translates roughly as “the more it changes, the more it remains the same”. As the media headlines focus on places like Russia and the Ukraine, Syria and Iraq, and the Middle-East, one does not have to look very far to find the origins of complex, convoluted conflicts occurring in our modern world.
The show highlights images from the beginning of the war, before most of the iconographic events ever occurred. In 1914, there were no trenches and no chemical warfare. However, there were Zeppelins, Armoured Rolls Royces, large battleships, and massive guns.
